2020 Class Schedule and Descriptions

We offer full day (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) classes for children of ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14.  Although class names may be identical for both age groups, the content is adjusted to be age appropriate.

Summer Camp Classes: Week 1 (June 8 to 12)

Full Day Class CANCELLED: Funky, Chunky Cityscapes


Instructor: Diane Humphrys

Crooked rooflines, whimsical windows, climbing vines! Fashion whimsical houses – polka dotted, striped, plump, and skinny ones too – out of varying shapes and sizes of wood. Create a mixed media city ablaze with vibrant colors, textures, doodles, secret words, phrases and layers, layers, layers! Adorn the structures with flowers, snaking rivers, a beaming sun and fanciful designs. Create a cityscape journal filled with favorite words, designs, colors, doodles and more! Learn new techniques, work with a variety of mediums, and have fun creating whimsical, sculptural houses straight from the imagination. Take home original 3-D masterpieces that will bring smiles to all.

Full Day Class CANCELLED: Watercolors & Alcohol Inks Magic


Instructors: Diane Humphrys & Tracey Simmonds

Touch a paintbrush to paper and watch the color explode! Get lost in the magic of alcohol inks and watercolors. Work with a variety of brushes, tools and materials to discover the exciting unpredictability of these mediums. Observe as the colors mix to create a vibrant sky, cottage landscape, or flower garden. Move from loose intuitive painting to painting controlled details while on an exploration of painting with each medium. Take home an abstract tile, raised panel, small watercolor studies and a large watercolor composition for all to enjoy.

Full Day Class CANCELLED: The Incredible Tree: A Mixed Media Adventure

Imagine! Just imagine…a tall, towering tree brimming with surprises! Bring that magical tree to life through sculpture and collage. Plan and design a huge tree and background brought to life with painted and Citrasolv papers, acrylic inks, acrylic paints and watercolors. Add pizazz to the tree with texture paste and found objects of every shape and size—old keys and watches, jewelry, wire, beads, colorful cabochons and much, much more. Take home a large 12″ x 36″ canvas sporting the most incredible tree ever! People will be amazed! Don’t miss this adventure!

Full Day Class:  CANCELLED: Harry Potter Yule Ball


Instructor: Jen Wojnar, Andrea Comiez

Venture to Hogwart’s for a week of glittery and magical thrills. Don a favorite Harry Potter costume on Monday, watch the Sorting Hat at work, and begin the magical adventure in preparation for the holiday ball. Paint a snowy owl canvas that could pass for Hedwig and design a Harry Potter Christmas card to send to a favorite friend. Make a Deathly Hollows wreath and Harry Potter ornaments to adorn the Art First Yule Ball tree. Conjure up potions that would make Harry proud, take classes in magical creatures, learn spells and charms, and win house points for Harry Potter trivia. Top off the week with elegant clothing to watch the Yule Ball and snippets of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire* at the Art First Broomstick theater. Hurry to Platform Nine and Three Quarters and join the fun.

*Please be advised that this week will be enhanced with Harry Potter movies. Please be sure you are comfortable with your child viewing these before you enroll in this camp.

Full Day Class:  The Splendiferous Birds Return

Gooseneck gourds??? Absolutely!!! Create a stunning whimsical bird with only a dried gooseneck gourd! Use bold colors to create a whimsical palette and add textures and lines for dazzling effects. Embellish with sparkling eyes, luscious eyelashes, colorful feathers, flirty boas, jewels and other ephemera. Adorn the bird’s long skinny legs with stripes, zigzags, or dots and add final touches with wisps of fluffy feathers blowing in the wind. No bird ever had more perfect legs for scooting across sandy beaches or grassy fields. There’s never been a more sophisticated, eclectic bird! Mount on a wooden base and escort it home. It’s going to love living there!

Full Day Class CAMP IS FULL: The Faeries Amazing Forest Hideaway Adventure

Enjoy woodland living as the faeries vacation in an amazing forest hideaway. Totally disguised as gourds—no one can locate this abode or interrupt the peacefulness of the forest! Transform two large gourds into a cabin hideaway that all faeiries will adore. Design a one room living quarters complete with comfy couches that can transform to sleeping spaces, squishy chairs, a warm colorful rug and snuggly wool blankets. Don’t forget a tiny kitchen to prepare scrumptious meals…simple but delicious. Hang a rustic chandelier from the towering ceiling and place welcoming floor lamps to complement the roaring fire. When the cabin is complete, design an amazing garden for total relaxation. Build stone steps and walls, restful ponds, swings, Adirondack chairs and even small guest houses. Fairies love to have family and friends visit too. Add woodland plants and trees perfect for a garden. Don’t forget the flowers peeking out among the rocks and even a forest animal or two. It’s going to be a perfect, restful adventure in this hideaway among the trees.

Full Day Class  Felted Fantasies

Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Princess and the Pea! Jump into the world of fairy tales and felt away! Select a favorite tale and capture it with the magic of unspun wool. Learn to needle felt brilliantly colored fibers to capture the whimsy and magic of the tale. Create rolling hills, vivid castles, a gnarled vine, stacked mattresses or furry critters…all with wool. Embellish the creation with beads, metallic threads, wood, lace and more. Take home a fiber creation framed in a vintage 18”x25” shadow box from the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It will truly be a masterpiece!

Full Day Class Miniature Menageries

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. Tell the story of the seasons…in miniature! Create tiny worlds of wonder that are windows in time. Needle felt a miniature spring world with tiny houses, green grass and blooming flowers in a delicate china tea cup. Move on to summer and tell its story in a tiny tin box – brilliant green trees, summer flowers, picnics and more. What fun! Create fall’s story in a wooden shadow box complete with vibrantly colored trees, migrating birds and falling leaves. Move on to winter and create a clock assemblage with snowy trees, animals in the woods or even a Christmas scene. Have fun creating miniature worlds of wonder!

Morning: Ages 9 – 11 / Afternoon: Ages 12 – 14 – Become a cabinet maker for the week! Build a six board chest that will enhance the décor of any bedroom or family room. Learn safety rules and techniques and begin to build. Use a hammer, nails and glue to construct the piece. Paint the exterior of the project with milk paint for an velvety, non-toxic and environmentally friendly finish. Personalize the inside of the chest with felt lining, decoration, and storage compartments. Take home a piece of woodworking to be proud of and keep forever. *This camp is limited to 10 artists.

Morning: Ages 12 – 14 / Afternoon: Ages 9 – 11 – Enter the fantastical world of legend and sorcery crafted by the imagination. Become a warrior strong or a wizard wise. Develop a character and memorialize it in sketches, paint and clay. Design and build a 3D model with hills, caves and valleys and paint with acrylics paints for depth and dimension. Sculpt dragons in vivid colors to mount on painted wooden bases and fashion magical clay dragon eggs as well. Explore with the imagination, create masterpieces and have fun! Don’t miss it! *This camp is limited to 10 artists.

Full Day Class Mix It Up!


Instructor: Diane Humphrys

Jars of buttons! Mounds of beads! Rolls of wire! Get ready to have fun and create a mixed media assemblage that rivals all others. Dig into stacks of handmade papers, containers of beads, metal objects, fabric, wooden pieces and much more. Find treasures* that bring pizazz to the piece and make it pop. Work on wood to layer papers and use tools to disassemble items and reassemble in interesting and abstract ways. Place CDs to reflect the light and layer colorful cabochons to catch the eye. The sky’s the limit! No mistakes! Just pure fun! Take home a masterpiece to hang and enjoy for years to come! * Artists may bring treasures from home to add to their assemblage.
