2020 Class Schedule and Descriptions

Your child (age 5-8) can take morning classes (9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.), afternoon classes (12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.) or stay all day, taking both classes.   Although class names may be identical for both age groups, the content is adjusted to be age appropriate.  Some of the differences are noted in the descriptions for each age group below.

Summer Camp Classes: Week 1 (June 8 to 12)

IT’S A SNOWY DAY

(Ages 5-6) Snowmen, sleds, igloos! Snowball fights, warm coats and mittens! Slide right down the hill to Art First’s snowy day! Paint snowy trees, and fashion lacy snowflakes ready to fall from the sky. Listen to snowy books, paint a snowy polar bear hiding in the snow and pose for a special snowy portrait. Mix up snow dough and make “snow” for fun with a friend. No need for winter clothes, it’s warm inside in spite of the snow!

*Parents please send a winter coat, hat, and mittens on Tuesday for a special art project. Shhh…it’s a secret!

MASTERPIECES WITHOUT A BRUSH!

(Ages 7-8) Scrapers, string, feathers! Scrape, smoosh, swirl! Paint masterpieces with everything but a brush! Create a mixed media painting with eye droppers, feathers, scrapers, splats, dots and more. Scrape chalk for one of a kind mar-bling and manipulate string for tantalizing shapes and swirls. Fill squirt guns with paint and watch the magic hap-pen. Take home a framed masterpiece that bristles never touched. No brushes allowed! Just old paint clothes, an imagination, and lots of smiles! Come join the fun!

LOOK NO BRUSHES!

(Ages 5-6) Paper towels, rolling pins, trucks! Splat, spin and smoosh! Paint masterpieces with everything but a brush! Paint with marshmallows, bounce balloons, and race cat toys and ping pong balls through paint! Paint a dot mural, stamp with pool noodles, and splat paint with mallets! Twist, twirl, and turn while having fun! No brushes allowed! Just old paint clothes, an imagination and lots of grins! Come join the fun!

HURRAY! IT’S A SNOW DAY!

(Ages 7-8) Snowflakes, frosty trees, snowmen! Snowballs fights, mittens, scarves! Slide right down the hill to Art First’s snowy day! Paint a landscape with a brilliant sunset of magentas and purples shining behind icy trees, fashion lacy snowflakes in the Japanese Notan style, and create a one of a kind snowman. Paint a polar bear with personality just waiting to play. Mix up snow dough for fun with a friend and have a ball in the “snow”. No need for mittens and a hat, it’s warm inside in spite of the snow.

BEACHBALLS, SAND & SUN

(Ages 5-6) Sun, Sand, Surfboards, Shades! Come enjoy the fun during beach week! Sway to the rhythms of beach music while embellishing a beach hat, tee shirt and sand pail. Design a beachy bingo game for more fun on the sand and paint underwater portraits in the style of David Hockney. Stuff them all in a beach tote painted in “beachy” colors. Wear a swimsuit on Friday and bring a towel and sunscreen. Play water games, splash in the Art First “pool”, run through the sprinkler, and bask in the sun at “our beach”.

CAMP IS FULL: WALKING ON SUNSHINE

(Ages 7-8) Watermelons, Ice Cream, S’mores! Baseball, Camping, Swimming! Celebrate the lazy days of summer! Finger paint a mesmerizing acrylic painting and watch the colors blend and spread. Print with foam paint to create amazing rain-bows and create a mixed media popsicle collage with uniquely painted papers. Design a summer t-shirt, sculpt clay suns and stamp an original print with handprints. Come create under the big shade tree at Art First and enjoy the warm, leisurely days of summer! Don’t forget the sunglasses!

CAMP IS FULL: SUNSHINE & LOLLIPOPS

(Ages 5-6) Swimming, camping, hiking! S’mores, watermelon, ice cream! Celebrate the lazy days of summer! Finger paint brightly colored papers and create a mixed media popsicle collage. PIGGY PARTY

(Ages 5-6) Oinks! Squiggly tails! Snorts! It’s a piggy party! Get ready to have fun! Giggle with Mo Willem’s Elephant and Piggy books and paint a watercolor piggy jumping for joy. Design a cuddly piggy pillow that’s perfect to snuggle with while reading piggy books. Paint a piggy bank for saving money, create a piggy lantern, and sculpt a flying Sculpey clay piggy. Who knew pigs could fly. Come join the party!

HIGH UP IN THE TREES

(Ages 7-8) Clay trees, watercolor trees, abstract trees! Climb into the world of trees! Investigate the trees at Art First then begin the adventure. Construct an abstract tree with piles and piles of wood. Paint it in favorite liquid watercolor hues and decorate with smaller wooden pieces in coordinating colors. Take it home to proudly hang on the wall. Paint a water-color resist tree, sculpt a clay tree plaque, and design a Zentangle leaf that will amaze everyone. It’s going to be an amazing week for hanging with the trees…no climbing, but lots of fun!

UP IN THE TREES

(Ages 5-6) Tall trees, gigantic trees, magical trees! Spend the week “in the trees”! Investigate the trees at Art First and make leaf prints and tree bark rubbings. Paint trees in brilliant colors and collage multicolored trees on a snowy landscape. Shhh! Don’t tell how the magic colors were created! Make a mixed media tree using acrylic paints, glitter glue, pom poms jewels and more. Design a wall plaque with clay, listen to tree books, and have fun under the trees!

THOSE CRAZY PIGS!

Instructor: Jen Wojnar

(Ages 7-8) Cute little pink pigs! So lovable – but pigs in books are amazing! Jump into the world of pigs on pages! Read When Pigasso Met Mootisse and paint an acrylic pig portrait in the style of Picasso and print a vibrant Matisse inspired mono-print to frame. Discover the real story of the three pigs. Was the wolf bad? The pigs? Could they fly? Find out in videos of The Real Story of the Three Pigs, The Three Wolves and the Big Bad Pig and more. Create and illustrate the true story of the three pigs in an original cartoon book…complete with speech bubbles. Sculpt pigs that fly…oh, yes they do…and create a button and bead collage of…that’s right…a pig!

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

(Ages 5-6) Button nose, scarf, top hat! Trees, lights, ornaments! Snowmen, reindeer, snow! Spend the week frolicking in holiday fun! Create reindeer portraits with fancy antlers and fashion glittery snowmen that shimmer and shine. Don’t forget a warm scarf! Design a mixed media evergreen Christmas tree decked out in ornaments created with strings, pom poms, sequins, jewels and other ephemera. Listen to holiday tunes, play reindeer games, and dig into “frozen” playdough. It’s going to be an amazing holiday week at Art First!

CAMP IS FULL: THE ORNAMENT EXTRAVAGANZA

(Ages 7-8) Ornaments, Ornaments, Ornaments! Glittery, shiny, fun! Create clay ornaments and embellish with glittery paint. Build a wintry terrarium complete with whimsical snowmen in a wintry landscape and design a personalized ornament complete with Christmas lights galore. Shhh– don’t tell. It’s a secret! Have a blast at the Art First holiday adventure. Don’t miss the fun!

DECK THE HALLS

(Ages 5-6) Sparkly, glittery, shiny! Ornaments, ornaments, ornaments! Spend the week making ornaments to decorate the tree next year. Create stars or trees out of clay and embellish them with glittery paint. Fashion a snowy globe complete with a whimsical snowman, lots of snow and glittery trees. Create a unique ornament out of a gourd and fashion Jolly Old St. Nickolas out of wood. Don’t miss the fun! It’s going to be a great holiday week at Art First!

CAMP IS FULL:  CHRISTMAS IN JULY CELEBRATION

(Ages 7-8) Snowmen! Reindeer!, Christmas trees! Jump right in and celebrate in July! Sew a snowman pillow complete with ear-muffs and a carrot nose…perfect for snuggling on cold nights! Design and collage an abstract evergreen tree using painted papers and embellish with sequins, jewels and other sparkling ephemera. Paint a miniature reindeer portrait complete with colorful scarf and display it on an easel. Listen to holiday tunes, play reindeer games, and dig into “frozen” clay. It’s going to be a holiday adventure at Art First!

‘ROUND & ‘ROUND WE GO

(Ages 5-6) Big, small, tiny, huge! Circles, circles, everywhere! Create with circles of all sizes. Paint watercolor circle worlds and lacing circles, create blending circle paintings, and design mandalas with raised shapes. Pound circles and create round beads with dots, stripes and swirls. Paint a cooperative circle painting and use found objects that are circles, circles, circles to create a watercolor wax resist. ‘Round and ‘round we go! Come join the fun!

GLOW IN THE DARK

Instructor: Margaret Vidumsky

(Ages 7-8) Lightning bugs! Plankton! Jellyfish! It’s a glow party! Spend the week with things that glow and learn the science behind the phenomenon! Paint a glowing moon and an octopus that glows in the dark…just like the real one! Create a beach scene with glowing plankton that will set the shore aglow under black light. Paint with glow in the dark paints, create with glow in the dark chalk, concoct glow in the dark bubbles and create a fluorescent oil pastel bubble drawing. Top off the week with a glow in the dark party complete with fluorescent face paint, glow sticks, glow in the dark tic-tac-toe and black lights, of course!

GLOW PARTY

(Ages 5-6) Glow in the dark paint! Rocks! Play dough! It’s a glow party! Spend the week creating with glow in the dark art materials and learn about animals and objects that glow. Paint a glowing aurora borealis and create a crayon resist glow in the dark jelly fish – just like the real one. Play with glow in the dark play dough, make glow in the dark chalk, and blow and paint with fluorescent bubbles. End the week with a glow party complete with glow sticks, fluorescent face paint, black lights and fun, fun, fun!

IN THE ROUND

Instructor: Susie Steele

(Ages 7-8) Jump into the world of circles. Large, small, tiny, huge! Create with circles of all sizes. Design a circular watercolor landscape inspired by the work of Jen Aranyi. Turn a common household item into a brilliantly colored circle masterpiece to hang and admire. Design hanging bells that twirl round and round and experiment with different techniques for printing and painting circles. Create a mixed media masterpiece with painted circles, buttons, dots, found objects and anything round. Take it home to hang proudly on the wall for all to enjoy. What fun creating with circles!

CONSTRUCTION ZONE

(Ages 5-6) Hard hats, tool belts, safety vests! Excavators, Dump trucks, Cement Mixers! Spend the week getting to know heavy equipment! Learn about the types of big construction equipment and the jobs they do. Listen to construction books, create a vehicle collage and even paint with toy construction trucks. Paint a construction vehicle playmat with roads leading to construction sites. Don’t forget the lakes, houses and stores along the way. Dig with front end loaders, dump sand with dump trucks and scrape dirt with bulldozers. Invent a new LEGO® piece of heavy equipment to assist on construction sites built with…LEGO® blocks. Rev up the engines! It’s going to be an amazing week to create, build, play and have fun!

ACTION! ART!

(Ages 7-8) Scribble! Swoosh! Tear! Spin! Pound! Aim! Get ready to move! Scribble to music, draw with monstrous strokes and splash, rip and tear to create a colorful collage filled with patterns and textures. Peddle bicycles and big wheels through paint for an action art canvas of colorful circles. Play table hockey with paint, pound mallets, bounce Slinkys and throw paint while creating and having fun! Leave the best clothes at home. Wear old ones that appreciate paint. This is going to be rip-roaring fun! 

READY! SET! GO!

Instructor: Maddy Davis

(Ages 5-6) Ride, roll, toss. Spin! Pound, Bounce, Pop, Twist! Get ready to move! Peddle Big Wheels and Tricycles through paint to create an action art canvas of colorful circles. Play table top hockey with paint, paint with electric tooth-brushes and aim at a canvas with paint-filled squirt guns. Smack wood blocks, pound mallets, and paint with plungers while dancing to music. Who knew painting could be this much fun! Leave the best clothes at home. Wear old ones that appreciate paint. Rip-roaring fun is going to come fast!

CONSTRUCTION JUNCTION

(Ages 7-8) Backhoes, Excavators, Bulldozers! Roads, Bridges, Houses! Jump into the world of construction equipment. Learn about the different kinds of heavy equipment and the jobs they do. Watch videos, listen to books and learn about modern technology and construction machines! Create a construction vehicle collage with pictures, magazines and drawings by “you know who”! Have fun painting with toy vehicles and design a construction vehicle character with crazy hair, silly eyes, turned up nose and a crooked smile. Build a balloon powered construction vehicle and challenge classmates to races. How fast will it go? Have fun with challenges, build, play and create while having fun with heavy equipment!

(Ages 5-6) Fe Fi Fo Fum! Visit the magical kingdoms of unicorns and dragons – no giants just whimsical unicorns and friendly dragons. Listen to dragon and unicorn books, paint with UNiCORN SPiT and sculpt unicorns and dragons with clay. Create dragon or unicorn watercolor resists, make dragon eggs, a rainbow collage, and play with unicorn playdough. It’s going to be a shimmery, whimsical, magical week!

THE ROYAL KINGDOM

(Ages 7-8) Welcome to the Royal Kingdom! Kings, queens, castles, moats and lots of magic. Sculpt magical castles out of clay and paint in shimmering colors. Any king or queen would want to reside there. Paint the royal pet in watercolors and oil pastels. Is it a royal dog or a royal cat? Create a royal silhouette complete with a jewel encrusted crown then design a crown fit for royalty. Wear it to the royal feast on Friday. Don’t miss the fun!

KINGS AND QUEENS

(Ages 5-6) Welcome to the world of royalty! Kings, queens, castles, royal horses, thrones and lots of magic! Paint royal self-portraits in vibrant colors, design crowns, royal capes and scepters and sit on the royal throne. Stamp and paint castles, design jewel encrusted goblets, and decorate the class castle with paints, stamps, and drawings. Create the royal steed to ride in the parade and take part in the royal feast at the end of the week. Don’t miss the fun!

UNICORNS & DRAGONS GALORE!

(Ages 7-8) Step into the magical world of unicorns and dragons! Choose a magical creature and start creating! Create a papier-mâché unicorn or dragon and embellish it with favorite colors, glitter, sequins, pom poms and more. Design a mixed media collage complete with buttons, old jewelry, beads and jewels and create a whimsical unicorn or dragon with clay. It’s going to be a whimsical, magical week!

Afternoon Love Bugs, Hearts & Friends Layer It On

LAYER BY LAYER

(Ages 5-6) Pom poms, jewels, yarn! Ribbon, sequins, beads! Collage like crazy and have loads of fun! Combine watercolors with patterned washi tape for a multicolored collage. Paint with brilliant acrylic paint, then glue and stick photographs*, words, artwork and more all about…you! Nothing could be more special! Play with textures to create a colorful texture collage filled with yarn, fabric, sandpaper, confetti and more! Layer and layer collage ephemera and see what happens. Brilliant! Don’t miss the fun!

*Young artists may bring copies of photographs from home on Monday to use in their collage about themselves. Family photos, pets, sports, special places and any photo that would make the collage special would be appreciated. Pictures from magazine will also work. Please do not send the original photographs. 

HEART EXTRAVAGANZA

Instructor: Maddy Davis

(Ages 7-8) Collage, paint, sculpt and have fun with hearts, hearts, hearts! Sculpt an air dry clay coil heart and embellish with color and a love bug. Design a woven paper shadow box complete with a special heart. Paint watercolor resist hearts for a mixed media heart collage and blow paint for a wild hair heart portrait. Who knew hearts were so much fun!

LOVE BUGS, HEARTS & FRIENDS

(Ages 5-6) Celebrate friendship, caring, happiness and love! Listen to books, collage, paint, sculpt, dance and sing! Create love monsters and sculpt an air dry clay heart embellished with wire and beads. Make a painted paper heart collage, experiment with color mixing hearts, and create watercolor resist hearts. Hearts, hearts and more hearts! Come join the fun!

LAYER IT ON

(Ages 7-8) Paint, papers, glue! Tape, stickers, yarn! Work with a multitude of collage materials to create unique and special masterpieces. Create a mixed media collage all about…you! Cut out magazine pictures of special places and things, draw pictures, cut out handwritten words and bring photographs from home*. Glue and stick…Voila! Move from color to black and white collage. Use stickers, labels, patterned papers, and more to create a striking modern collage. Participate in a class collaborative table painting collage. Paint with brilliant acrylic colors, oil pastels and watercolors and then the fun begins. Layer and layer collage ephemera for amazing results. Ready to collage? Come join the fun!

IT’S HAMMER TIME*

(Ages 5-6) Pound, pound, pound! Hammer, Hammer, Hammer! Learn hammer safety, pound playdough with mallets and have fun creating with…hammers! Build a mixed media masterpiece with nails, thumbtacks, ribbon and string. Pound more nails and build a bristly hedgehog. Keep it for a pet. Design and plan a crazy contraption that works. Use wood, watercolors and oil pastels then layer nails and upholstery tacks. Finish the masterpiece with wire, beads and more! Amazing! Work on a class collaborative string art project throughout the week. What fun to hammer, create and make art!

*Parents, please be advised that our artists will be instructed in hammer safety, use child sized hammers and wear safety glasses. They will be supervised at all times. Please be sure that you feel confident that your child is ready to use a hammer safely before you register.

CAMP IS FULL: COMIC SUPERHEROES

Instructor: Maddy Davis

(Ages 7-8) Don a mask and become a Superhero! Declare a superpower – strength? flight? elasticity? speed? – and start the transformation. Wear a cape and mask and create a superhero self portrait. Draw comic superheroes and invent a new superhero. Immortalize the new superhero in Sculpey clay and chronicle their adventures in a comic book authored by you know who! Create Lego® superheroes, mix up incredible slime, create an incredible movie mix and watch snippets of The Incredibles 2. It’s going to be an awesome week!

SUPERHERO FUN

Instructor: Maddy Davis

(Ages 5-6) It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Art First Superheroes! Watch them leap buildings, bend steel, shape shift and look through walls! Become a Superhero! Declare special powers and design and create a mask, cape, wrist cuffs and logo. Paint a Superhero portrait and create Superheroes out of clay. Take pictures of Art First Superheroes flying over buildings and take part in the “Art First Superhero Training”. KAPOW! KABOOM! WOW! This week is going to be amazing!

CAMP IS FULL: HAMMER IT OUT*

HELPING NATURE’S NEIGHBORS

(Ages 5-6) Birds! Toads! Bees! Insects! Be a good neighbor to the nature friends living in the neighborhood. Paint a bird house in a colorful design and take home for a nesting site as well as protection for feathered friends. Make fat balls to feed the birds and give them energy. Hunt for toads living at Art First and make a toad house to take home for the toads living in the backyard. Will one move in? Learn about the good insects living in our neighborhoods and sculpt an insect to live on an original painted flower. Hang it on the wall at home as a remembrance to always be a nature neighbor!

CAMP IS FULL: EXTRAVAGANT CLAY BIRDS

(Ages 7-8) Squish, pound, roll! Shape, paint, bake! Jump into the world of clay…and birds! Spend the week creating a flock of clay birds of all different colors and sizes. Create a clay pinch pot bird with sassy eyes, dangling legs and feathers galore. Shape a silly whimsical textured bird with googly eyes and wiggly legs ready to fly through the air straight to the living room wall. Work with clay to create a long legged tropical bird sunning in the sand and create a coil pot nest full of colorful eggs. Spend Friday working with clay in an open studio. DOWN BY THE BAY IN CLAY

(Ages 5-6) Wander to the water’s edge and jump right into the… clay! Create animals that live in the water and have a blast! Make a clay pinch pot and turn it into a loveable whale. Flatten clay and create a brilliantly colored fish with a crooked smile and a whimsical coiled clay turtle adorned with beautiful colors. Dive deeper and fashion a polka dotted octopus with wiggly tentacles. Spend Friday playing with clay in an open studio. Dig into incredible foam dough, build with model magic and play with play dough and more! It’s going to be a great week to dig into the clay!

CAMP IS FULL: PROTECTING NATURE’S NEIGHBORS

(Ages 7-8) Bees, insects, birds, frogs! Spend the week learning how to help these creatures and bring them into the neighbor-hood. Learn the benefits of an insect box and build a sectioned one filled with pine cones, cardboard, bamboo piec-es, wood and more. Learn how to care for the box and residents in it and take home for installation. Discover how to help and protect toads and decorate a toad house. Will one take up residence? Paint a bird house to bring nesting birds to the yard and watch for birds, bees and toads in the Art First neighborhood. It’s going to be fun having these creatures as neighbors.
